The Great Paths
It seems the strangest thing that I have not written on these for they are in many ways one of the most important elements of the whole system.
In earlier notes I have mentioned how the relation between the height of a triangle 1,3,5 units in relation to its base (as derived from 2n-1) makes a pattern which runs 2-3-5-9-8-6-2. This drawn on the square of the nine single integers forms the above pattern. We finish the tree by drawing 1, 4, 7, 1 in the central column.
This circuit gives us a different way to interpret the tree. That is, there is a circuit within the tarotic archetypes and what is more, some paths which we previously thought of as single are in fact part of a larger path.
3-5 (lovers and lust)
5-9 (hanged man and chariot)
8-6 (the tower and art)
6-2 (hermit and emperor)
In this way (though we do not yet know the best way to conceive this) 4 and 7 are somehow either the product of or the creation of the circuit. Either way we maintain it makes sense to think of these paths as complementary unities.
An accretion can be sketched of the simple manner in the whole circuit can be conceived, though one could think long on this and describe it in many ways.
How can we break into a circuit? We must start somewhere. The Empress is the beginning point, though it also makes sense to remember that the emperor is close behind her. Indeed it is the unity of these two which is then reflected in the lovers and lust. The product of this union is the Hanged Man (a clear pregnancy symbol) and his subsequent birth (the hero in the parents world). His ascension is the Sun. The Tower and Art are his mastering of the forces of destruction and creation. His final lonely traverse from creation is his becoming-Hermit and his Dominant state is the return to the Emperor.
In writing this I re-believe in the largely male forces that drive the circuit as opposed to the femininity of the central column.
The circuit is entirely phallic. This statement is not true, there is the Empress to thwart it. There is however some sense to the general notion which supports an opposition we draw out of the tree. The general flavour of the circuit could be said to be phallic. The sword of zayin, the snake of teth, the water and fish hook of the next great path (mem and tzaddi). The sun, and the front of the head, destruction, the tongue in the mouth and the art, leading up to the absolute male dominance of the hermit-emperor, yod-he. The window of he provides the hint of the feminine to come in the empress.
Clearly I have selected here for the notion as presented to me. There is dominance of male phallic symbolism in the circuit but probably its not quite to the extent that I originally perceived it. The central column could said to be the opposite. The priestess, and the moon manifest the feminine whereas the wheel of fortune offers a touch of difference. It is not strongly male, though Jupiter’s presence pushes it towards this edge.
I am considerably amazed both that the GRA tree exists and that I have not come across it sooner:
Hesiod, Theogony 115 ff (trans. Evelyn-White) (Greek epic C8th or C7th B.C.) :
“Verily at first Khaos (Air) came to be, but next wide-bosomed Gaia (Earth) . . . and dim Tartaros (Hell) in the depth of the wide-pathed Earth, and Eros (Love), fairest among the deathless gods, who unnerves the limbs and overcomes the mind and wise counsels of all gods and all men within them. From Khaos (Air) came forth Erebos (Darkness) and black Nyx (Night); but of Nyx (Night) were born Aither (Light) and Hemera (Day), whom she conceived and bore from union in love with Erebos. And Gaia (Earth) first bore starry Ouranos (Heaven), equal to herself, to cover her on every side, and to be an ever-sure abiding-place for the blessed gods. And she brought forth long Ourea (Mountains) . . . She bore also the fruitless deep with his raging swell, Pontos (Sea), without sweet union of love.”
This is fascinating insofar as it shows a harmony of the set up in this accretion. Often is Khaokmah thus called and its attribution is indeed airy, Ouranos the sky. Gaia is the Empress straddling the Binah-Khaokmah axis. Nyx is an attribution of Binah. I can tentatively see Erebus in Geberuh [Gerebus]. Hemera in Hesed, Pantos in Yesod, Eros in Netzach, and Thanatos in Hod -but only tentatively…
The colours of Tiphareth and Yesod have been changed, though not entirely to my satisfaction. Clearly there needs to be some kind of shift. The question is what is the most appropriate way for great paths to interact with these spheres or even vice versa. Given that there is some implication that it is 4 and 7 that are more primordial than 1, surely these colours need to be right. This is not the final accretion of colour but it is a shift.
